Im sure you're not looking for a random golfer's help, but since I've been through a similar situation when i first started, I'll give a suggestion. 1) your swing path has almost as much to do with hooking/slicing as the club face. 2) even with a weaker grip, you could be over-rotating your wrists and closing the face at the end of the swing. 3) just youtube search things like "hooking irons" and you'll find great advice.

Once again good stuff Chris thanks. Youth is wasted on the young you know! The turf interaction with Chipshot : you contact the ground on the target side of the ball ⚽️...removing a chil of the turf ; Hence the name chip. and as you mentioned correctly with the pitch shot it’s simultaneous with the back of the ball pitching the ball ( bounce ) into the air with spin and higher trajectory..... The ratio of flight to runout is Gracie and will be a good reinforcement in the learning process... Carry on! The 7 iron has very little pounce so as to reduce trip interaction making particular that particular shot less likely to be the higher percentage shot⛳️🎲🏌🏻‍♀️🏌🏼🤺

Chris what poor chippers/pitchers - and I'm right up there with the best or worst depending on your sense of humour , want is some understanding how far the ball should travel. If I have a pitch of say 20-25 yards using a 56o wedge on a flat green running at average club golf speed of 8-10 feet. Where should the ball land and what is the expected run out i.e. the ratio of flight to run? Then the same for a 60o. The amount of back swing and wrist flex/break matter and most importantly tempo, the latter comes down to the golfer, But lets assume it is slow/controlled and relaxed - no white knuckles. Please don't tell me each golfer is different - I know that , but take 100 golfers and get an average and they wont be too far from your result. Speed and spin comes later, I just don't want the chunk or thin from not knowing what to expect for distance. NEXT - how to pitch and chip from scrubby lies. The pristine stuff you play of gets the putter every time, until I know how far the ball will go and I fly the wet and damp grass. Great video - many thanks.

I'm supposing that these exercises .. especially the last several uploaded lessons .. have done me a bit of good. As in the previous note on this lesson: I played in the two day small time club championship. I counted a minimum of 10 terrible breaks that occurred. (One shot .. my second to a par 5..trying to bounce the ball on to a front pin.. the ball struck an old replaced divot.. the divot bounced high in the air .. killed the energy in the ball .. and the ball landed in deep rough 8 yards short of the green) Repeated bad break again and again. I had 6 birdies overall total for both days; shot 75 and 76 respectively. And finished with the low total of all groups .. in first place of my division .. with the low total of all divisions. So .... thanks CR .. I would say these have helped. :-)

Hi Chris, The modern way of pitching and chipping is leading towards the way Jason Days way of Chipping an Pitching. No wrist set and more shallow through the impact area allowing more bounce of the club head. Using more hinge can only be less forgiving and more steeper through the impact area which can cause more fat and thin shots, if you are not spot on. Less hinge and more shallow you could hit 5 inchs behind the golf ball and the outcome can be quite forgiving. You obviously respect David Ledbetter as you not long ago add a lesson with him. In one of his resent videos even he coach's more towards Jason Days method of chipping and Pitching . He said quote , Less grass less hinge, more grass more hinge as you need a steeper angle of attack because the grass gets in the way. Also its easier to control a chip and pitch shot by using less hinge more body rotation, as hinging creates more club head speed and more spin and to much going on in movement. So this method of chipping and pitching we need to be showing a more forgiving way of short game as this game is hard as it is. This works for people who are more natural golfers but most of us are not, and so many golfers cannot chip and pitch this way and thats why they are not very good in there short game. Since i seen you last i changed and studied Jason Day and now my short game as come on so much and now i can pitch and chip a golf shot as good as a plus 4 handicap. Just need to work on my long game more but its coming together as i also study Mike Austin methods. Much more rewarding. I do like your videos tho as i think you are a great guy. Just letting you know my journey in learning this wonderful game at 60 yrs old. Take care

7 oy oldin
ChrisRyanGolf
ChrisRyanGolf

Hey Marcus great to hear from you and hope you are well. Love the lesson grass less hinge, more grass more hinge’ definitely using that one! This was instruction to play a mid flighted pitch, where there will be some wrist action and arm rotation, but not loads, I do like to see wide and shallow. Jason is a great player, but unfortunately his method has drawbacks and when you look at his strokes gained performance from rough and shorter pitch shots he is not as competitive due to his technique. Sergio in the other hand uses a lot more wrists and performs better than Jason from both rough and over short distances. Each method has its strengths and drawbacks, I like to coach a blend of the two, shown here, and the coach the golfer to adapt technique to suit the situation/lie. Hope your playing lots of golf Marcus 👍👍

Never really understood the difference, had some coaching on the chip shot and it works but I've applied it to all situations, eg chipping over a bunker , I can get it over the sand but invariably it runs too far , I can now adapt the pitch shot instead. Really good point about understanding what suits the individual , need to improve this area as it's where i lose most shots, I'm either too shy or too bold with my chipping, glad i've now got an alternative to look at, especially from a bit more distance from the pin. Excellent advice as always , in comparrison to some other coaching on You Tube you break it down much better. Keep up the great work. Thanks

7 oy oldin
Over50 Adventures
Over50 Adventures

@Daniel Mosias Ground conditions primarily dictate how you should manipulate the face of your club (open or closed) The bounce is chosen for course conditions AND club face manipulation. Wider sole is better for bunker play, in general. For an all-around wedge/bounce for general play, The Volkey S grind with 10* of bounce is pretty hard to beat, imho.

Hey Chris. Great video. Quick question. How does lie affect the choice? For example, I've often found that chip shots are trickier to play out of the rough, especially if there's not a lot of green to work with. And especially if the lie isn't great. For me, if I were in the rough, I think I'd go with chip if it's a good lie and pitch if it's not a good lie. But I suppose distance from hole/what's between you and the hole would also be a factor. I'd also think that you'd want a higher lofted club out of the rough. What are your thoughts? Also, the link in your description didn't work for me :(

7 oy oldin
Jamie McCallum
Jamie McCallum

@Over50 Adventures maybe i don't really know what fluffy lie means. does it mean a bad lie?

7 oy oldin
Over50 Adventures
Over50 Adventures

@Jamie McCallum No, the opposite. LOWER LOFT for fluffier lies. Ex: regular lie, 54*. Fluffy lie, 50* or PW.

7 oy oldin
Jamie McCallum
Jamie McCallum

@Over50 Adventures so then the worse the lie, the more lofted, i assume?

7 oy oldin

General rule of thumb - the fluffier the lie, the lower the lofted wedge you use.

I tend to use the chip shot technique at both types of distance. From further away, I make the shoulder turn larger, increasing the arc length and perhaps a bit more swing speed. With a 56 degree wedge, I am able to carry bunkers or just a fair amount of rough. The problem I have is when I’m a bit too far for a chip technique to have enough carry and roll. This video should help me work on my pitches. Thanks.

On chipping with the same style but different clubs. That is awesome. To help people decide which club to use, you should just mention the "Runyan Method" (named after Paul Runyan), also known as "The Rule of 12". It is easy to do the calculation and works great for people who don't have enough time to practice all the club combinations. Pick landing spot (say, 2 yards on the green) and simply calculate how many parts roll vs how many parts carry. So, if you are 3 yards off the green and want to land it 2 yards on the green, that is 5 yards of carry needed. Then, if there is another 10 yards from that point to the pin, the ration is 2 parts roll to 1 part carry (i.e. 5 yards of carry PLUS 10 yards of roll). Take 12 MINUS 2 which is 10. That is the number iron to use (10 is PW, 9 is 9-iron, etc.). So you would use a PW. If you were in the same spot but the pin was 20 yards from that spot on the green, that would be a 4:1 ratio (20 yards roll to 5 yards carry) so 12-4 is 8 iron. Very simple. If you are playing lightning fast greens or very down hill, use 13 as the number instead of 12 and if they are very slow (like aerated greens) use 11. So, on fast greens, you would use a 9 iron in this example (13-4) and if they were slow, you would use a 7-iron (11-4).

This is the best explanation I've ever heard of "Runyan Method" or at least the only clear one I've heard. I only use 3 different irons for chips myself .. a chipping iron .. a 56 deg lofted wedge and a 7 or 8 iron depending on how fast the greens are that day. But, I may practice the RM now a little more after this explanation .. so thank you.
