Taking in the expansion of the universe. Does our galaxy move in a zig zag motion or diagonal motion or a straight line on it's journey through and with the universe? And I would like to know as our solar system is dragged along. How many difference ways am I moving at the same time as I stand still on planet Earth. Thank you Vsauce for the thought provoking questions that you hide inside your answered filled videos.

@Synthetic What an awesome reply. Yes, because of you and this answer I have been helped. I understand the answer can be so much more professionally explained. I believe after you have read my question and analyzed it's contents. You kept the answer to my level of comprehension. That tells me you have a caring and compassionate mind of more than scientific complexity. And I thank you for your answer. But also the warm feeling I have knowing I have communicated with such a person as yourself. In my thoughts I see you walking above on the bridge of humanities space ship. And yet taking time to come below decks and show us things are well. Thank you again.

Kun oldin

You are moving in one direction, which is a combination of different vectors, most of which aren't relevant to your daily life, but to the planet, solar system, or galaxy as a whole. Movement is not a step-wise process where we move a little in x direction, then a little in y direction, then a little in z direction (so no zig zag'ing). For example, the most influential motion one is the rotation of the Earth. Your straight path deviates by 1 degree every four minutes or ~0.00412 degrees per second. The magnitude of the force changes with your latitude and is measurable with standard weights and a scale sensitive to a thousandth of a gram. Our orbit around the sun only deviates from a straight line at a rate of about 1 degree per 24 hour day. The sun around the galactic center takes hundreds of millions of years, so it hardly changes at all from a straight line, year over year. Otherwise, I'm not sure how a word like diagonal is appropriate to use here. A diagonal line is still straight, it just has more than one directional component. What I'm sure you meant is that we are on several curved paths, but the largest of those paths are so huge that for the purposes of moment to moment predictions, we can treat them as straight. The good thing is that human-made probes don't need to worry about galactic motion because of the conservation of momentum. I hope this helped.

6 kun oldin
Siva Karthik Boddapati

5 kun oldin
Synthetic
Synthetic

Generally, yes. Measurements will remain the same. The expansion of the space-time really only matters on the scale of megalightyears. And the effect only really adds up in regions of extremely low density, such as the voids between clusters of galaxies. On a human scale, chemical bonds and gravity completely overwhelm any expansion that might occur. We're in no danger of planets drifting from their orbits or basic measurements changing. Gravitational waves pass through the Earth pretty often, as it turns out, but it only causes an oscillation about the width of a proton; incredibly tiny, but detectable with the huge laser interferometers we have because tiny changes add up to detectable signals.

So if you lift off from earth in a spaceship and go in the opposite direction to eliminate the 790 000 km p h you will actually only be standing completely still. what will happen except being bombarded by space rocks and planets still going at that speed. Will, you actually be standing still and then will you be pulled directly in a straight line to the centre of our galaxy. and if you shoot off the front Will the speed of 790 000 be deducted from the speed of light?

8 kun oldin
Synthetic
Synthetic

First, the speed of light in a vacuum is the same for all observers. It's an interesting quirk of physics, but it's been experimentally proven and is an important property of light. So unless the hypothetical spaceship is going at a large percentage of the speed of light, it's not worth worrying about. Second, "standing completely still" relative to what? The galaxy as a whole? A distant galaxy? As for what will happen to your ship when the engines turn off... you can consider yourself as being still to whatever distant point of reference you chose, but gravity will inevitably change that fact. If your ship is still within the plane of the galaxy, but in interstellar space, I'll agree that your ship would slowly start to drift towards the galactic core, but a passing star (since the ship was no longer orbiting the core, right? but the stars are) would eventually pull you towards it instead. So even if you were "falling" towards the core, other stars would eventually drag your ship off course. Just my own guess, but I'd say that the powerless ship would end up in a slow, elliptical orbit around/through the core that'd take hundreds of millions of years to complete. Does that help?

@Ravaxr : I think you lost not Gee at "Polaris".

8 kun oldin
Ravaxr
Ravaxr

Polaris is 1/2 a degree off the celestial pole right now. Why do I say 'right now'? Because it wasn't the pole star thousands of years ago. Thuban was a better pole star while the pyramids were being built than Polaris is now, and there are documents of navigators and astronomers complaining about the lack of a good pole star in the meantime. They change due to precession just like a gyroscope. Polaris is also 400 light years away, and the 'ride of your life' at the end of the video is a mere 0.08 ly in length, assuming it is a century. The speeds of our orbit around the galaxy sound like they are blisteringly fast, but they really aren't. Not when you consider just how mind-bogglingly huge the universe is. Voyager 1 is going about Mach 50, and has been going that fast for most of its flight since 1977, almost straight out of the solar system. It's not even a light day away yet.

9 kun oldin

" it appear to be still. Not! " Polaris appear to be still only for fools who never actually bothered to take a look at the sky. The rest of us know that Polaris moves in circular path, same as any other of hundreds of thousand catalogued stars on the sky.

4 kun oldin

@Cool Hand Truth The air pressure gradient is so easy to demonstrate that people do so accidentally all the time. Seal a water bottle at altitude and it'll spontaneously collapse as the pressure increases when you lose altitude. There's no barriers or containers between the different altitudes, yet there is a pressure difference. If you take a cubic meter of space and count how many molecules there are inside, you'll get 10 trillion trillion at sea level. 4 trillion trillion at the summit of Everest. Go to the Kármán Line 100 km up, and you'll get 1 million trillion, and this is considered the border of space. At the ISS, it'll still have 10 trillion per cube meter. Halfway between earth and the moon you find 7 million. Out in the Oort cloud at the edge of the solar system you still find 10,000. Even the most rarified parts of intergalactic space have 10 molecules per cube meter. Space is far from a perfect vacuum and atmospheric pressure is a gradient in every sense of the word.

Both are technically true, depending on which perspective you take. However, I think these events are presented as happening to 'us', rather than the other way around, is because the Sun and the Earth are far more massive and gravitationally dominant. What these interloper objects do is affected far more by the Sun and Earth than the other way around.

@Farhan Sakib Socrates You are welcome. It is interesting to note that only the British contued to start the year on March 1st. The Roman had stopped that somewhere in 4th century BC. This is also why the fiscal year ends in March and not in january.. An old habit from when the year started on March 1st. Also amusing the Roman called January from the god Janus who has two faces one looking forward and the other backward, best for the 1st month of the year, and it explain why it is February that has a variable number of days, 918 or 19), totally illogical to put this extra day there unless it was the LAST month of the year. For more info great read: "Mapping Time, The Calendar and its History" by E G Richards Osford press ISBN: 0 19 286205 7.

The Julian calendar the british empire followed started on MARCH 1st. When they switched to gregorian calendar the year started on January 1st. Thus Jan and Feb 1752 disappeared the same way 3rd to 13th of september disappeared. In british sphere of influence countries, 1752 started on March 1st and ended on December 31st, lasting only 10 months. George Washington born in February 1731 (Julian) turned 20 y-o in february 1751. But he had no 1752 birthday , the next birthday was 1753, he was biologically 21 years, but chronologically 22 years. Therefore, the switch included the proviso that the previous months of Jan and feb would be readjusted by one year. Birth certificate shows 1731, history says 1732. Same day.
