Ok guys, fantastic information and breakdown here as to the “When & Why” us early extender golfers do what we do! I am John in this respect and have been working for YEARS to figure out how to eliminate my early extension and all of the problems that exist because of it. But I am like MANY other golfers out there that are Not like John, a gifted athlete and single digit golfer that can just take and swing adjustment idea and implement it into their golf swing in just 37 swings with no drills or training aids and run with it successfully from there from just an idea of a feel! This video lacks the “HOW” to achieve a pivot around the center of the pelvis, besides just thinking 🤔 about doing it in the swing. If it was as easy as just thinking abut how to achieve a position or movement in a golf swing and doing to correctly in 37 swings then most golf instructors would be out of a job fairly quickly and we would all be PGA Touring Pros. All this to say Why is there no “How” given in this video to go along with the “Why and When” to help us non-John golfers (those of us who can’t implement a swing change in 37 swings sans aids or drills) to achieve this magic move of pivoting around the center of the pelvis?! A portion of the video devoted to maybe a drill or two on HOW to achieve this pivot move and How to know when we are doing it correctly would have been absolutely awesome! I have this fantastic information now on What is causing early extension in the golf swing but after watching the video still have no idea how to go about implementing the suggested swing change correctly. Why did y’all leave this important bit of information out of the video?! Are there any drills or feels (besides just thinking about pivoting around the center of the pelvis) that could help us learn and ingrain this vastly important move? Thanks!

What I don’t understand is if I try to keep pelvis more forward over the arches and also forward shin lean - it feels like I am falling forward on my toes. It just seems this setup would logically have most of the mass forward so therefore feeling on the toes too much?

3 kun oldin
Mike Rodriguez
Mike Rodriguez

@Athletic Motion Golf whoops. Yeah I meant over ankles. Still feels almost off balance to me. But will see if I adapt. Does shin flexibility maybe come into play?

3 kun oldin

Center of pelvis over the ankles, not arches. Yes, for most golfer with too much mass back, it will feel out towards the toes initially.

Hi, I really like this video as it helps me visualize making better turns and rotation for being square at impact. I am 6' 1" tall, 60 years old, played contact sports in my youth, and had lower back surgery in 2015. I stretch on a regular basis and it helps but I still cannot get a full turn with my back pointed at the target (Those days may be gone). I am in Atlanta and I would really like to put on the suit and see how you guys can help me get back to playing better golf. Thanks! Jeff

I don’t doubt that you are right as I just tried this and it seems to work! (I was totally the same as the guy in this video.) But I don’t understand how pivoting around the centre of your hips can keep both butt checks back? Surely as the left butt cheek moves back the right should go forward while pivoting around the centre?

wow this is incredible. great job. question though. at one point in the video you showed that the tour players had their heels and their butt up against the plane of glass. I tried that with a wall and it's not even possible. What do you recommend on how to get a proper setup in that regard? thx

The focus should be on the center of your pelvis over your ankles. The avatar is "human like" but is just a wrapper placed around the data for easy viewing. The key is center of pelvis and ankle relationship, not butt and heels of the avatar👍

I had some back issues and I began struggling with early extension. It’s been going on for the past couple of years and recently gotten worse. I considered myself a good athlete like this guys but I really began having trouble hitting the ball on the club face. I was moving into the ball so much I was having trouble with hitting the ball in the heel and lately quit a bit on the hosel😤😭. Tried everything to get and keep the hips back so I could make contact in the center of the face. I saw this and immediately had an ah ha moment. My butt was so farmer back that there was no where to go but in towards the ball. I went to the range and worked on this. At first the shin tilt felt almost like I was getting my weight out to my toes but it was just enough that my rear end started going back as it should all the way through the swing. It was a good session. I hit some bad ones but I hit some very solid shots as well. Got some work to do but thanks so much for popping up while I was looking at some other videos.

For me and my swing, this was by far the most informative and effective instructional breakdown I have ever watched. I have always felt like my hips have been blocked from firing through effectively but never understood why. After watching this video and seeing how the amateur's hips moved from the initial move compared to the pro, I immediately went to the driving range to try and apply this concept. My only thought was to keep my hips back during takeaway. The results were pretty remarkable. My swing felt simple after feeling like I was able to create space with my hips for my arms to swing through. Previously I have seen video of myself with the forward thrusting hips and the arms/hands being squeezed for space but didn't know how to fix it. My shots today were longer, higher, straighter and more consistent than they have been in a long time. Thank you for such an awesome, detailed breakdown. I'm a baseball coach and spend countless hours going through videos trying to find the commonalities that separate lower level and elite level players. I believe the devil is in the details and y'all do a great job. Thanks again!

Very interesting video. The question I have is when you see the pro's hit shots the shots their hips are almost completely open at impact. The middle of their pelvis is behind where they started at address and far away inside the "wall" that it began against. How do you explain this?

3 oy oldin
Phil Hazel
Phil Hazel

I think the set up advice is good for me. There is a certain amount of mobility and coordination required to do this. Most of us don't have it. Unless I really develop much more leg strength and hip mobility, I'll always be coming out of it badly. I understand what "John" was going through, I've broken par before, most rounds I break 80 but my shots are very inconsistent. I think the solution lies in the gym and not the practice range.

Wow... Great video... Great, great. In regards to the setup change, hips over the ankles, that feels to me like it's necessary to give the pivot range of motion both back and through. Do I have that right? I looked at my video and sure enough, my hips are to far back. When I correct that with some shin tilt, my hips feel like they can turn easily around the pelvis whereas in the previous setup, it's a struggle, and hurts actually when hitting balls, to get my hips to pivot around the pelvic center. Am I on the right track there? I recently played with a friend of mine who is a former touring pro. He was very complimentary of my swing and gave my a couple tips to improve so I decided to come home and start from the ground up. I videoed just my lower body from 6 angles. That revealed disruptive flaws so it's been my focus in practice and research. I feel if I get that right, the upper body corrections will be easier. This video is right on time.

Hey Mike, This was a light bulb moment... I was lying to myself and blaming age for loss of distance, inconsistent ball striking, and the shanks.... After 3 days of watching this video over and over and lots of slow motion swings I decided to hit the range and give it a go... Results are fabulous a high penetrating ball flight with a little draw... One question I have however is the shift on the downswing... How much or far do you think the shift is? Just asking for the future for now I’ll keep doing what I’m doing until it becomes second nature.... OMG the money and frustration I’ve gone through over the past 5-7 years I can understand why he gave you a hug. Thank you so much for all you and Shaun do for the game..

Love it, great job! The shift is small to recenter is small. Put two lines on each side of your leg at setup. Aim to get you hips back in the middle of those two lines by the time you reach the top. Don't worry about much after that in the way of lateral movement, you momentum with take care of the rest.
